On one side you have the growth engines: the LNG export build-out, the energy transition into hydrogen and CCUS, and the recurring aftermarket revenue Chart bought when it acquired Howden in 2023. On the other side you have the debt Chart took on to fund that same Howden deal, the lumpiness of large project orders, and exposure to the industrial capex cycle. Where that balance tips decides where the stock goes.

Plenty of investors approach GTLS as a simple “LNG winner” or a “hydrogen theme” play. That framing is half right. The real story is a transformation — Chart moving from a project-driven cyclical equipment maker into a company with a steady stream of service revenue running off its installed base. If that transformation lands, a valuation re-rating is justified. If it stalls, or if debt becomes the dominant concern, the stock takes sharp drawdowns at cycle lows.

Cryo Tank Solutions. Cryogenic tanks and trailers that store and transport LNG, industrial gases, and CO2. Is the Recurring Aftermarket a Real Moat?

The core of the bull case is the claim that Chart is “no longer just a project company.” Let me test that.

Installed industrial equipment — an LNG liquefaction skid, a large compressor, a cryogenic storage tank — runs for decades, and over that long life it needs regular parts and maintenance. That aftermarket demand has a few structural features.

Safety and uptime force OEM service. Cryogenic and high-pressure equipment can fail catastrophically. Plant operators generally prefer genuine OEM parts and certified service over cheaper third-party alternatives, because an hour of unplanned downtime costs far more than the premium on a part.

The aftermarket compounds with the installed base. Every new unit sold adds another future stream of service revenue. Stack Chart’s new sales on top of Howden’s decades of installed equipment, and that stream keeps thickening.

It cushions the trough. In a downturn, when new project orders freeze, the equipment already running still needs servicing. Aftermarket revenue defends the downside of earnings precisely when project revenue is weakest.

Do not overstate the moat, though. Project work still makes up a substantial share of revenue, and aftermarket alone cannot fully offset the cyclicality of the whole business. The key to validating the bull case is checking, quarter by quarter, whether that recurring mix is actually growing. Management saying “recurring revenue is rising” and the numbers actually showing it are two different things.


LNG, Hydrogen, CCUS: Where the Growth Levers Are

Chart’s medium-to-long-term story hangs on three structural trends.

The LNG export cycle. The US turned shale gas into an LNG export powerhouse feeding Europe and Asia, and the Middle East continues large expansions. Every new liquefaction train needs heat exchangers, cold boxes, and storage tanks, much of which flows to Chart. The rhythm of LNG projects reaching a final investment decision is the biggest wave hitting Chart’s backlog.

CCUS (carbon capture, utilization, and storage). The tighter carbon regulation and subsidies get, the larger this demand.

The caveat: hydrogen and CCUS are still closer to option value than to earnings today. The bulk of current results comes from LNG and industrial gases. Hydrogen and CCUS depend heavily on policy, subsidies, and project timing, and it takes time for expectations to convert into revenue. Mistake this long-dated potential for near-term growth and you will overpay. Realistically these are three-to-ten-year levers, not this year’s story.

The Competitive Map: Who Chart Fights

Chart’s competitive picture differs by segment, and you need that nuance to see clearly.

The relationship worth studying is with industrial-gas majors like Air Products and Linde. They are large customers for Chart’s equipment, yet they have the in-house engineering to build some of that equipment themselves — making them partial competitors. Rather than selling one piece of equipment, it can bundle gear across the full sequence of cooling, compressing, storing, and moving gas. Whether that integration synergy actually shows up as cross-sell orders, though, is still a story being proven rather than a settled fact.


Investment Risks: The Balanced View

The more attractive the growth story, the more soberly you should weigh the risks.

Leverage risk (the big one). The debt from the Howden acquisition is GTLS’s central vulnerability. In a higher-rate environment interest expense eats into earnings, and if the cycle turns and EBITDA shrinks, the leverage ratio can actually climb back up — a vicious loop. If deleveraging does not proceed as planned, the valuation discount persists. This is not a one-quarter headwind; it is a structural variable that governs the story for years.

Order lumpiness. Large LNG and industrial project orders cluster around approval dates. A big contract lands in one quarter and the backlog spikes; in quarters with no such contract, intake looks empty. Overreacting to a single quarter’s order number is an easy way to misjudge the business. Read it across several quarters instead.

Industrial capex cycle. Demand for new equipment ultimately rests on the capital-spending decisions of energy and industrial customers. When oil and gas prices, interest rates, or the economic outlook deteriorate, project FIDs get pushed out and orders freeze. Aftermarket cushions this macro sensitivity but does not erase it.

Hydrogen and CCUS delay. If the long-dated levers of hydrogen and CCUS commercialize more slowly than hoped, the valuation premium assigned to them can deflate. Policy reversals or subsidy cuts are the specific danger.

Scenario 1: Buy the Trough vs. Wait for Proof of Deleveraging

Once net-debt-to-EBITDA is falling each quarter and the aftermarket mix is rising, you can climb aboard at the start of a valuation re-rating. You miss the absolute low but sharply reduce the balance-sheet risk.

Scenario 2: US Tax Treatment and Holding GTLS

For a US-based investor, GTLS held in a taxable brokerage account is subject to capital gains tax on sale — the lower long-term rate if held more than a year, ordinary rates if held less. Because GTLS pays little or no dividend, almost the entire return comes as capital appreciation, which means you control the timing of the tax event through when you choose to sell.

Metrics to Watch Each Quarter

When you track GTLS, four numbers deserve first attention in every earnings report.

First: new orders and backlog. Orders lead future revenue. A steadily building backlog means better revenue visibility ahead.
