Westlake: chemical stock or building-products stock?
Westlake resists a single label. Half of it is a commodity chemical business; the other half is a housing building-products business. Summarize Westlake’s edge in one sentence and it is this: it makes ethylene and PVC from cheap US ethane. To see why that is a moat, start with the feedstock.
Ethylene comes from two routes. You can crack oil-derived naphtha (most of Europe and Asia) or crack ethane separated from natural gas (much of the US Gulf Coast). The single variable that governs Westlake’s chemical profit is the spread, the margin left after subtracting feedstock and energy costs from the selling price.
Understand the chlor-alkali structure first. The cruelty of the cycle lives in the second row. New plants take years from decision to startup, so when several companies read the same boom and all expand, the supply lands together a few years later, spreads break, and earnings drop. The more attractive the bull case, the more coldly you weigh the risks.
Chemical cycle downside. The most direct risk. Overlapping expansions or slowing global demand break PVC and caustic spreads; the cost advantage guarantees survival, not stable earnings, a structural feature, not a passing headwind.
